Steven’s STORY:

When Steven was 4 years old his father was diagnosed with kidney failure. His father and mother left Steven and his siblings in the care of their grandparents so the father could receive treatment at Lira Hospital. Steven’s mother had to care for his father while he was receiving treatment. His father’s condition worsened, and to pay for more treatment, his parents had to sell their family land and the only cow that they milked daily for their survival. A year later, Steven’s mother abandoned his father and went to live with another man. Since there was no one else to care for his father in the hospital, Steven was sent to care for his father when he was only 5 years old. Life became even harder for Steven as he lived with the responsibility of giving his father the care and support the hospital required of family members, while being afraid that his father would die any time under his care. Life kept getting worse and they did not have money for food and his father’s treatments. To survive, Steven and his father began begging for money on the streets of Lira City.

Saving Grace in Uganda staff found Steven and his father, desperate, hungry, and begging on the streets. With the father’s consent, Steven was taken off the streets of Lira and given a new home in the Saving Grace Children’s Village. He is able to keep in regular contact with his father.

Steven is very grateful he is no longer hungry and begging in the streets. He is learning to read and write as he attends Saving Grace Primary School. He is blossoming as he experiences the love of God in his new home. Steven hopes to one day become a doctor and help other sick people like his father.
