esther'S STORY:

Before finding a home at the Saving Grace Children's Village, Esther spent two years on the streets. Her mother was mentally unstable, which led to the divorce of her parents when she was very young. In Uganda, divorce of parents usually means that total abandonment of their children. After the divorce, Esther began working as a maid, making barely enough money to buy food. During this time she was abused by street boys and suffered from chronic malaria.

Street girls are often difficult to find due their nightly commuting from the streets to homes. Shortly after coming to SGU, Esther used the relationships she had formed to locate other girls and help bring them to Saving Grace. As the oldest girl in the Saving Grace program, many of the younger girls look up to her as a role model. You can find her at the village sitting, talking and spending time with all of the girls. Esther is a bright girl who enjoys learning and attending school. She loves to sit and play games and build legos with the other girls at SGU. She plays an important role in helping take care of Fred and Kosta's 4 children when she isn’t off at secondary school. As an exceptional math and English student, Esther dreams of working as an accountant.
